Help! My Cake Turned Out Awful!

Following are some quick cake baking tips if your cake doesn’t turn out quite right:

If your cake falls …

  • oven door openThe oven wasn’t hot enough
  • The door was opened too often while baking
  • The cake wasn’t baked long enough

If your batter overflows …

  • The batter was over mixed
  • Too much batter in the pan – check your pan size in the recipe

If the cake peaks in the center …

  • The oven was too hot at the start of baking – test your oven to make sure it’s the actual temperature that you have it set for
  • There was too much flour in the batter
  • There was not enough liquid in the batter

  • The batter wasn’t mixed enough
  • The oven temperature was too low
  • There was too much baking power or baking soda in the batter

If the cake texture is dry …

  • The cake was in the oven too long
  • If there were egg whites in the recipe, they were overbeaten
  • There wasn’t enough shortening in the batter
  • There wasn’t enough sugar in the batter
  • The pan was too large
